The
Charleston Gray Watermelon was developed by the Southeastern Vegetable
Breeding Labratory of Charleston, South Carolina and was introduced into
commercial production in 1954. The variety came about by crossbreeding
together the watermelon cultivars Africa 8, Iowa Belle, Garrison, Hawkesbury
and Leesburg. The variety is similar to the watermelon varieties Purdue
and Hawkesbury.
The
Charleston Gray Watermelon produces long vigorous and is resistant to anthracnose,
fusarium wilt and sunburn. The variety will prosper just about anywhere
where watermelons may be grown and produces uniform, long oval watermelons
with a light green rind with a slight gray color. The rinds are hard and
thin, making the Charleston Gray Watermelon an excellent shipping variety.
Each watermelon weighs from 25 to 30 pounds and possesss a fine red flesh
that has a firm texture and a very sweet flavor with large brownish-black
seeds.
