Kohlrabi ( Brassica oleracea
Gongylodes ) is a member of the Brassica family and is related to cabbage.
The word "Kohlrabi" is adopted from the German and literally means " Cabbage
Turnip " and has been grown in European gardens since at least 1500, with
the first botanical description having been published in the 1550's. By
the end of the 16th century, this wonderful vegetable was widely known
in Germany, England and elsewhere. Kohlrabi was first introduced to the
United States in the early 1800's.
Early Purple Vienna is a
standard home garden and market variety of kohlrabi originally introduced
to the United States prior to about 1860 from Austria. The bulbs of this
variety have a purplish hue with green white flesh and are larger than
the Early White Vienna Kohlrabi, but are best utilized in the kitchen when
they are about 2 inches in diameter. Kohlrabi is best harvested before
it becomes large and woody. Kohlrabi is very high in Vitamin C and Potassium.
Matures in about 55 days.
