Purple Calabash Tomato Origin: Mexico Item #: TOM021 Purple Calabash is a very primitive and very unusual open pollinated tomato variety with unusual crinkled looking purplish black tomato fruits. The tomatoes are literally ruffled in appearance and are a very dark purple in color. Many consider the Purple Calabash to be the darkest and truest purple colored tomato in existence.This unusual tomato variety is excellent when used fresh and features a rich, sweet taste. On a side note, although this tomato was likely not being grown there, it is today one of the tomatoes being grown at Thomas Jefferson's preserved historical gardens at his estate at Monticello in the United States.
