Great White Beefsteak
Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM009
The Great White Beefsteak
tomato is often reported by other seed sellers as being an American heirloom
tomato variety with a history that traces back to the era of the American
Civil War during the 1860's, however, in truth, this wonderful white tomato
variety is actually of a much more recent origin.
This lovely tomato was originally
offered by Gleckler Seeds Co. in the early 90's. Gleckler's customers often
sent seeds from their own garden that they were proud of and hoped that
the company would later introduce to the public. In 1987 or 1988, a woman
sent Gleckler seeds of an orange and yellow Oxheart tomatoes from her garden
for them to try. Gleckler grew them out and amongst the plants was one
that proved to be a white beefsteak, which as it turns out, the woman did
not have in her garden, so it was assumed that the plant was the result
of a natural mutation. Gleckler began to cultivate this new white beefsteak
tomato and a number of years later released it under the name of "Great
White Beefsteak". It has become popular in the years since. (Where the
erroneous story that the variety was a Civil War era heirloom originated,
is unknown.)
Great White is typically
considered the finest and the largest of the white tomato varieties, producing
huge creamy white tomatoes that can often weigh up to two pounds, making
it larger than White Beauty / White Snowball. When ripe, these creamy colored
tomatoes typically have a yellowish hue on the blossom end. The tomatoes
feature a mild, sweet flavor and have alot of juice, yet few seeds. The
plants of Great White are extremely productive and also extremely hardy,
featuring a great amount of foliage to protect against sun scald. Great
White is an excellent tomato variety for hot climates in that it is not
only drought resistant, but also crack resistant. Indeterminate. Matures
in approximately 85 days.

Henderson's
Ponderosa Red Tomato (Henderson's Crimson Cushion, Scarlet Ponderosa, Red
Majestic)
Origin:
United States
Ponderosa
Red, also known as Henderson's Crimson Cushion, Scarlet Ponderosa,
Red
Majestic and a host of other names) is the grandfather of all modern
beefsteak tomatoes. In particular, Red Beefsteak was a selection of this
variety from the 1950's, while Burpee Delicious was another selection
from the 1970's. Originally introduced in 1892 under the name Crimson Cushion
by Peter Henderson and Co., Henderson reffered to the variety as "The Crimson
Scarlet Brother of Ponderosa" and it said that this variety was simply
a red fruited sport that appeared in a field of Henderson's Ponderosa.
Ponderosa
Red is a very good example of an old fashioned tomato and gives good yields
of very large, deeply ribbed, beefsteak type fruits of a bright scarlet
color. The flesh is solid, yet juicy and has a nice balance of a sweet
and acidic true tomatoey flavor. Ideal for slicing into great big slabs
to put on sandwiches, burgers or to just enjoy salt and peppered. Indeterminate.
90 days.

Roma Tomato
Origin: United States
Roma
is an outstanding and disease resistant tomato variety that produces oblong
red, plum-like tomatoes of a medium size. Roma is ideal for making tomato
paste or for canning. There seems to be some debate about this tomato variety's
origin. Though it is typically assumed to be an Italian heirloom tomato,
in their 1958 annual catalogue, Geckler Seeds Company states that the Roma
is:
"A
very important new tomato development at the Plant Industry Station, Beltsville,
Maryland. Final selection came from the progenies of crosses of San Marzano,
Pan American and Red Top. Vine and fruit characteristics resemble Red Top,
but much more productive and larger than San Marzano."
In
the years since, this tomato variety has become one of the best known tomatoes
in the United States and is popular among gardeners as well as commercial
growers due to it's fine taste, meaty flesh and resistance against Fusarium
and Verticulum Wilt. Determinate. Matures early - 65 to 70 days. Roma is
a very popular tomato and not at all rare, but it is one of our personal
favorites!
1/4 oz. (2500 seeds) $12.50
Ace 55 Tomato
Origin: United States
Ace 55 is an old commercial
variety that was introduced in 1955 by the Campbell's Soup Company. Ace
excells over most other tomatoes when used fresh and is extremely low in
acid. (According to a 1970's era USDA study, this variety was so low in
acid that it was determined that this variety should NOT be used for canning
by standard hot water method). Strong plants produce an abundance of medium
sized, red oblong 8-12 ounce tomato fruits with a sweet taste and firm
flesh. Vines are resistant to Verticilum and Fusarium Wilt.
1/4 oz. (2500 seeds) $12.50
Homestead 24 Tomato

White Wonder Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM010
White Wonder is believed
by some to bear a close relation to another white tomato variety which
was being grown back in the 1860's under the name of the White Apple
Tomato here in the United States. Beyond the theory of this relation, very
little is actually known about the history of the White Wonder Tomato,
except for the fact that the variety has been grown for some time and is
among the most popular of the white tomato varieties.
The White Wonder Tomato is
an excellent producer of very mild tasting, creamy white colored tomatoes
in the range 5 to 6 ounces. The white color is seen inside and out, giving
the White Wonder Tomato an ivory white colored flesh. Excellent for slicing
or canning! Indeterminate. Matures in about 85 days.
White Beauty
Tomato (aka. White Snowball)
Origin: Unknown
Item #: TOM040
The White Beauty Tomato,
also known as the White Snowbal Tomatol, is a rare heirloom tomato that
was said to have been introduced between 1850 to 1863. Over 40 years ago,
this lovely white tomato variety disappeared and has only recently been
rediscovered in seed banks.
This wonderful rarity is
an extremely prolific producer of creamy white, round tomatoes up to 1
1/2 pounds each, but typically running about 8 to 10 ounces in size. The
tomatoes are very meaty, have few seeds and feature an extremely mild and
very sweet taste. Due to their high natural sugar content, they have a
low acid taste.
The tomatoes are a creamy
white, inside and out. In the past, White Beauty/Snowball was typically
used to make the tomato preserves that were so popular in decades past,
but it also excels as a slicer. These tomatoes are best harvested when
they are white to creamy colored throughout. When the tomatoes are of a
pale green to white, they could be considered under ripe, where as when
they are more of a whitish yellow, they are becoming over ripe.
Indeterminate. Matures in
approximately 80 to 85 days.

rare!
Livingston's
White Queen Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM042
Livingston's White Queen
Tomato was introduced in 1882 by the famous A.W. Livingston Seed Company.
Alexander
Livingston could be considered the grandfather of the tomato in North
America and his breeding work contributed great strides in the establishment
of the tomato as a crop in the United States. White Queen was the only
white tomato variety that Livingston ever introduced and it is certainly
a real gem! Being that White Queen is much less known than Livingston's
other tomato introductions, it is rarely mentioned among his main list
of developments.
Livingston's White Queen
produces a great abundance of 6 to 8 ounce, beefsteak type tomatoes that
are smooth save slightly ribbed shoulders which give the variety a true
old fashioned look and one of the nicest shapes of all white tomatoes.
Unlike many other white varieties, Livingston's White Queen is typically
remarkably free of blemishes such as cracks or catfacing that disfigure
many other varieties.
This lovely variety ripens
to a creamy white color throughout (a few may have a pinkish blush on the
blossom end). The tomatoes are very sweet and very juicy and possess a
very nice, balanced flavor. Good for slicing, salads and juicing.
This very old, very productive
variety is now becoming rare.
Indeterminate. Matures in
80 to 85 days.
Cream Sausage
Tomato
Origin: Unknown
Item #: TOM043
The Cream Sausage Tomato
is another very new white variety that was released only in the last few
years and still remains very rare. It is likely that its history is much
the same as the variety Greehn Sausage in that little is actually known
about its origin save the fact that it was first known in Western Europe.
Cream Sausage is a stunning
and wonderful white paste tomato variety. It is the only white tomato of
its type, in that it produces elongated tomatoes with pointed ends very
similiar to San Marzano, but unlike the aforementioned famous Italian Paste
tomato, Cream Sausage is a very pale, creamy white color! Cream Sausage
is a very sweet, flavorful variety and can be used to make a most wonderful,
cream colored tomato sauce.
Determinate. Matures in 70
to 80 days.
Recommended for market growers
and the gardener who likes the very unusual!
Being a new introduction,
Cream Sausage is VERY RARE!
