Growing Tomatoes - Growing Tomato

1. Soil Preperation: Tomatoes are a delicate crop, so choose a warm spot in front of a southfacing wall or fence to plant your tomatoes for the best results. During the winter, dig up your plot thoroughly (being careful not to bring clay or granite to the surface) and incorporate a good compost into your soil. Shortly before planting add a good source of fertilizer to the plot. If you lack groundspace, you can easly grow excellent tomatoes in 2 gallon sized pots or grow bags, but remember to water them regularly. In addition, regular feeding with a good fertilizer will be neccessary.

2. Sowing & Planting: Sow the seeds into a standard sized propogator filled with a good seed starting mix or compost.  Before you sow your seeds dampen the soil in your protogator and allow it to sit overnight.  Sow one seed in each cell of the propogator by placing the seed on top of the soil in the centre of the cell.  Sprinkle a light cover of compost or seed starting mix over the seed.  Cover the propogator with a cloak.  Alternatively if only a few plants are required you may use a pot of any size and a home-made cloak.  To make a home-made cloak take a small, clear-plastic bottle and cut off the top part of the bottle.  Small soda bottles cut at the top of the label are ideal for this purpose.  Place the cloak over the sown area.  Keep the soil moist, but not wet, for the best results.  Keep the newly sown seeds at around 65 degrees for the most rapid growth.  When the seeds have sprouted and matured into seedlings that are 6 inches high, transplant the seedlings into your plot, 2 gallon pots or grow bags.

3.  Looking After the Plants :  Tie the main stem of each plant to a cane or provide a cage for each plant.  Water and feed the plants regularly, especially in hot weather, to keep the soil moist.  Alternating dryness and flooding will lead to many problems, primarily split-fruit and blossom-end rot.

4.  Harvesting :  Pick the fruits when ripe and fully-coloured.  Always harvest the fruit with a sharp knife or pruners to avoid damaging the plant.

5.  Storage :  Tomatoes can be kept in a polythene bag in the bottom of your refrigerator for up to one week.  For longer storage they may be canned or frozen.  If you wish to can your tomatoes, you are recommended to obtain a good reference book on the subject.  Please visit our website for some recommended titles.  If you chose to freeze your tomatoes, for the best results peel and remove the cores of your tomatoes, simmer the tomatoes on your stove in a pot of water for 5 minutes and sieve them through a strainer to rid them of water.  Allow them to cool and then pack into a container and place them in your freezer.  Frozen vegetables keep for approximately one year.  Be sure to date your containers!

Black Prince Tomato
Origin: Russia
Item #: TOM008

The Black Prince Tomato is known in Russia as "Czerno Prinz Tomat" and next to the Black Krim Tomato, this is among the most popular and best known of Black Tomatoes. This outstanding tomato variety was originally introduced from Irkutsk, Russia (in Siberia) some years ago and is typically regarded as a true Siberian tomato variety due to its outstanding qualities in northern climates. Although the Black Prince could be considered a rare heirloom tomato in the United States and the United Kingdom, this tomato is widely raised in Russia and is regularly sold commercially by some of the larger vegetable seed companies in Russia today. In fact, its cultivation is so widespread in Russia that of late, a company in Volgograd has begun the marketing of a product called "Black Prince Tomato Oil", which is an extract of the Black Prince Tomato. This product is now being widely applied in Russia's food, cosmetics, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries and has been tested to have a wide range of health benefits due to the abundance of lypocene in this Russian tomato. Black Prince produces an abundance of medium sized red-brown tomatoes with dark brown (black) shoulders that features a rich, juicy taste. In fact, in a recent tomato taste test performed by Country Living Magazine, the Black Prince Tomato ranked as the #8 tomato in their taste test. Black Prince is a great tomato for your northern garden this year! Indeterminate. Matures in about 70 days.

Black Krim Tomato
Origin: Russia
Item #: TOM001

This rare variety was one of our top sellers earlier this year and is known in Russian as "Czerno Krimski" (Black Krim). Contrary to popular misconception on the part of most Tomato growers who believe that this variety is named after the Russian Crimea (Livadia), this variety hails from the Isle of Krim in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimean peninsula. I have tried numerous strains of domestic Black Krims before finally settling on a strain that we imported from Western Russia, which is an outstanding strain.

Black Tomatoes have been super hot this year and this one is my best! This variety is a medium-large sized maroon beefsteak with green shoulders and an intense, unique taste! Ideal for slicing, salads and more. Due to their natural salty taste, sliced Black Krims do not require salting and only a hint of pepper, which makes them ideal if you can not have salt in your diet. The production of this variety is intense and it will do quite well in containers, but if not watered evenly during the summer, this variety is subject to splitting. About 75-80 days to maturity.

Great White Beefsteak Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM009

The Great White Beefsteak tomato is often reported by other seed sellers as being an American heirloom tomato variety with a history that traces back to the era of the American Civil War during the 1860's, however, in truth, this wonderful white tomato variety is actually of a much more recent origin.

This lovely tomato was originally offered by Gleckler Seeds Co. in the early 90's. Gleckler's customers often sent seeds from their own garden that they were proud of and hoped that the company would later introduce to the public. In 1987 or 1988, a woman sent Gleckler seeds of an orange and yellow Oxheart tomatoes from her garden for them to try. Gleckler grew them out and amongst the plants was one that proved to be a white beefsteak, which as it turns out, the woman did not have in her garden, so it was assumed that the plant was the result of a natural mutation. Gleckler began to cultivate this new white beefsteak tomato and a number of years later released it under the name of "Great White Beefsteak". It has become popular in the years since. (Where the erroneous story that the variety was a Civil War era heirloom originated, is unknown.)

Great White is typically considered the finest and the largest of the white tomato varieties, producing huge creamy white tomatoes that can often weigh up to two pounds, making it larger than White Beauty / White Snowball. When ripe, these creamy colored tomatoes typically have a yellowish hue on the blossom end. The tomatoes feature a mild, sweet flavor and have alot of juice, yet few seeds. The plants of Great White are extremely productive and also extremely hardy, featuring a great amount of foliage to protect against sun scald. Great White is an excellent tomato variety for hot climates in that it is not only drought resistant, but also crack resistant. Indeterminate. Matures in approximately 85 days.

White Wonder Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM010

White Wonder is believed by some to bear a close relation to another white tomato variety which was being grown back in the 1860's under the name of  the White Apple Tomato here in the United States. Beyond the theory of this relation, very little is actually known about the history of the White Wonder Tomato, except for the fact that the variety has been grown for some time and is among the most popular of the white tomato varieties.

The White Wonder Tomato is an excellent producer of very mild tasting, creamy white colored tomatoes in the range 5 to 6 ounces. The white color is seen inside and out, giving the White Wonder Tomato an ivory white colored flesh. Excellent for slicing or canning! Indeterminate. Matures in about 85 days.
