Cushaw Green Striped
Pumpkin
Origin: United States
Item #: PUMPKIN005
The
Cushaw Green Striped Pumpkin, a member of the species Cucurbita argyrosperma
is a pumpkin of a different kind and is quite a bit different from more
traditional pumpkin varieties in that it has a curved neck with a bulbous
blossom end opposed to the more usual round or oval of common Pumpkins.
The species Cucurbita argyrosperma is native to North America and
this species is commonly refered to as "Cushaw" in the English language
(Mexican Spanish: Calabaza). Cushaw Pumpkins themselves, come in a wide
range of colors, with the Green Striped Cushaw Pumpkins having been on
the seed market since at least the 1880's. Originally, these "neck pumpkins"
were used to feed both cattle and poultry during the winter, but as time
passed, people came to appreciate them too.
The
Cushaw Green Striped Pumpkin has a creamy ground color with green stripes.
In addition to its decorative and fodder use, their thick yellow flesh
also makes fine eating. According to some cooks, if you want to make the
absolute finest pumpkin pie you've ever eaten, you use Cushaw Pumpkins
opposed to those more traditionally used!
