California Wonder was described by Maule's Seed as early as the 1920's, about which they say: "A wonderful pepper, not unlike Chinese Giant in size and blocky form. It is one of the largest peppers ever grown, being 4 to 4 1/2 inches average and often weighing one pound each, with extremely thick flesh of mild and sweet flavor. The glossy dark green skin turns to a bright crimson when the fruits are ripe. Flesh is very thick and the peppers are always sweet, crisp and tender."
