The Long Purple Oriental Eggplant, also known as the Long Purple Brinjal, is a famous and very old Eggplant variety from Pakistan that produces long, tapering Eggplant fruits. This wonderful eggplant variety has been known in the West since before 1885 and is the fore-runner to the many long purple eggplant varieties such as Ichiban and others. 

The plants reach up to 30 inches in height and are covered in clusters of long, thin, dark purple skinned eggplant fruits that grow from 8 to 12 inches in length.

Though this eggplant variety is native to Pakistan, it is found throughout th Orient, where this eggplant has many culinary uses, be it for making Tempura or for pickling by the Japanese, stir-frying or for boiling by Chinese, stuffing and baking by the Indian and Vietnamese. Long Purple Oriental Eggplants are very sweet and delicious and are typically cooked without peeling.

This wonderful eggplant is an old standby variety and a must have for those who love curries and especially Brinjal Bhaje!

The Diamond Eggplant is an extremely rare eggplant variety hailing from the Republic of the Ukraine. This lovely Ukranian eggplant, though very rare in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, is actually a very popular eggplant variety in Russia and the Ukraine. Seed for the Diamond Eggplant was introduced to the United States in 1993 and was collected by the Seed Savers Exchange who offered this wonderful eggplant variety to the American public. In 2002, we also made our own importation of Diamond Eggplant seeds direct from a seed dealer in the Southern Ukraine in order to introduce a new strain of genuine Ukranian breeding stock to the existing genepool to this wonderful eggplant.

Diamond is an exceptional and prolific producer of mild flavored, dark purple colored eggplants.
Each eggplant is very slender in shape and is approximately 2 inches in diameter and 6 to 9 inches in length. The egglants are produced in clusters of 4 to 6 fruit and possess a firm flesh with a superb, old fashioned eggplant flavor and are never bitter.

Diamond is the best eggplant that we can recommend to gardeners in cooler climates with shorter growing seasons.

The Black Egg Eggplant is a very fine Japanese eggplant variety that tields an aundance of 6 inch long, egg shaped black eggplant fruits. The eggplants of the Black Egg eggplant variety are superbly high in quality and possess a tender, mild tasting flesh. As with other Oriental Eggplant varieties, the Black Egg Eggplant is seldom bitter to the taste and does not require peeling.

This lovely Japanese eggplant matures early and does well in cool climates and at higher altitudes, making it ideal for areas with a short growing season.

The Ping Tung Eggplant is a wonderful Oriental Eggplant hailing from Taiwan and particularly from the vicinity of the town of Ping Tung, from which it takes its name. Despite having been introduced from Taiwan, this eggplant variety likely originally came to Ping Tung from China.

This wonderful eggplant variety is a prolific producer of very beautiful, long, violet-purple colored eggplants that are approximately 2 inches in diameter and reach up to 18 inches in length. Though long noted for its beauty, the Ping Tung Eggplant is also noteworthy for its hardiness and high disease resistance, as well as its productivity.

In addition to its value as an ornamental, the Ping Tung Eggplant is also one of the absolute best eggplant varieties for your kitchen. Being an Oriental or Chinese eggplant variety, it is rarely bitter and does not require peeling. The creamy colored flesh of this wonderul eggplant is extremely sweet and tender, far more so than other types of eggplants, and it truly does excell in a high quality taste.

Matures in only 65 to 70 days, making it one of the earliest eggplant varieties for your garden!

The Florida Market Eggplant is an old heirloom eggplant variety hailing from the State of Florida that was once used for commercial eggplant production purposes. The variety was originally developed at the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station at Gainsville, Florida in the 1940's by cross-breeding wild eggplant cultivars brought to the United States from India with commercial eggplant cultivars found in Florida at that time. The eggplant varieties Fort Myers Market Eggplant, Florida Beauty Eggplant and the Special Highbush Eggplant also originated from the same breeding project, but of this group, only the Florida Market Eggplant (which the United States Department of Agriculture registered as eggplant cultivar #GRIF 14170) still exists today. This eggplant variety has subsequently become rare over the last 60 odd years and is now rarely offered by seed companies. 

The Florida Market Eggplant was officially introduced to the public in 1948 by Atlas Seeds Company and quickly became the most popular choice of commercial eggplant farmers in the American South.

This lovely, old fashioned Southern eggplant variety produces very high yields of glossy, black eggplants that range from an oval to a teardrop shape. The eggplants are of a substantial size and are borne on large, vigorous plant of an upright type growth. The plants are extremely productively and is a continuous setter of eggplant fruits that makes it ideal for home or market use. The variety is resistant to Phomopsis, "tipover" and "bottle neck".

Florida Market is an ideal eggplant variety for slicing, stuffing and baking.

The Thai Yellow Egg Eggplant is a lovely and unusual eggplant that has only been introduced from Thailand in the last few years.

Enough good things can simply not be said about the Thai Yellow Egg eggplant. This is quite simply, one of the most gorgeous and one of the most unusual eggplant varieties we have come across.
